Perhaps the most famous in the "Spectacle Spontanée" series from French documentarians Boîte à Musique was this interview and performance with the folk singer Marlee Higgins Clark.

BEFORE SQUARE CIRCLE, THERE WAS NARRATOR:
The very earliest iteration of Square Circle was in fact known as Narrator, formed by Nick Crandall, Jacob Overman, and Eastover College classmate Connor Krause in early 2003 - a semester before Spencer Savard and Bill Bright would begin their fateful freshman year. The band has never publicly commented on his departure, though Krause notably attempted a lawsuit in 2008 for rights to Origins, Square Circle's first record. He was unsuccessful.

THE FIRST PRESS:
Above is the very first press the band got under the name Square Circle and with their final Spencer-Nick-Jacob-Bill lineup. The small feature appeared in the Eastover Herald and was written by Isabel Delacruz, a fellow Eastover student and friend of the band's. Not mentioned is that "Bill Bright '07" had officially joined the band only a week prior to the concert in question.
DECEMBER 2002
ROOT CURE + SQUARE CIRCLE LIVE AT THE MONKEY'S PAW
A flyer for Root Cure and Square Circle's starmaking double-header of a residency at Williamsburg's the Monkey's Paw. These early shows would initiate a long-time rivalry between the bands who, at their most reflective would admit that the other's success "pushed us" (Spencer Savard, The New York Times Interview, 2011).

SQUARE CIRCLE'S FIRST REVIEW
CaseStudy's infamous review of Square Circle's self-produced debut Origins. The review, later thought to have helped launch the band's career, kick-started a long and fraught relationship between indie rock's biggest band and the industry's most prominent media outlet.

SQUARE CIRCLE'S SECOND REVIEW
There was someone out there who understood Square Circle even in 2004 – none other than Daniel Ahn, Square Circle's archivist and biographer (and the writer of this sentence!). Though it circulated among a much narrower readership, his review (on the now-defunct blog Dream Home Heartaches) would lead to a career-spanning history together.

PØRTIA ANNOUNCES SQUARE CIRCLE AS OPENING ACT
It was the twist heard 'round the blogosphere: electronic legend Pørtia had tapped indie rock's fresh-faced princes as her opening act. The tour was announced shortly before the release of the band's second album, Signature Collection.

COVER BOYS
It was the perfect close to a year of soaring romances, major label turmoil, and some truly bizarre stories: Band of the Year in the classic indie rag Twist-Off Magazine. As irony would have it, the band would prove to have more staying power: Twist-Off would fold by 2011.

HEADLINERS WITHOUT A CAUSE:
Square Circle's surprise headlining of Coachella 2009 kicked off the band's promotional campaign for Four Dreams, the unexpected follow up to 2007's III.

They kept it short and sweet. To those who had come of age, fallen in love, embraced life's many ambiguities to the music of Square Circle, it marked a beautiful culmination.
